Tribute to

STEFANO NIAVAS

Forever remembered

In memory of Stefano Niavas

BCG Managing Director & Senior Partner | 2001 – 2025

Stefano Niavas will be remembered as one of the defining figures in the building of BCG in Africa, and as a person whose presence left a lasting mark on all who worked with him. After a two-year battle with cancer, faced with quiet strength and dignity, he leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his professional achievements.

Stefano joined BCG in Paris in 2001, before moving to New York and, ultimately, to Africa, where he would leave his most enduring impact.

As one of the founding members of BCG in Africa, he helped build the system from the ground up, first in Johannesburg and later across West Africa, including Lagos. His role was never simply operational; he shaped the culture, the ambition, and the identity of BCG in Africa at a formative moment.

Professionally, Stefano was a respected leader in Consumer Goods, serving as BCG's Africa node and a trusted advisor to clients and teams across the continent.

He led the Africa Center for Customer Insight, co-authored Winning in Africa, and brought rare depth to questions of African consumer dynamics and globalization.

He was also the first Africa People Chair, a role he approached with care and intention, helping to structure the people function across the region and investing deeply in those around him.

Stefano will be remembered as a true people's person, widely loved by colleagues, with a brightness and positive energy that touched everyone around him. He was a role model in how he handled people matters with unquestionable ethics, strong values, and deep empathy, while never compromising BCG's standards of excellence.

Lisa Ivers Managing Director & Senior Partner, Head of BCG Africa

What made Stefano memorable was not only what he built but how he showed up. Many of us will remember him at his desk, phone in hand, leaning in, genuinely listening, or the smile that, as far as anyone can recall, never once left his face. When he spoke, it was always considered and honest; he was never afraid to say what he truly meant. He had an extraordinary ability to hold humanity and high standards in the same hand, and he did so without effort or performance.

Beyond BCG, Stefano was a man of deep convictions: a passionate believer in education as a force for long-term change, and a proud champion of Africa's potential, one who understood, intimately, what that potential meant for real people. Above all, he was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Karen, and their four children.

His passing leaves a real absence in BCG, in the lives of colleagues he mentored, and in the broader community he cared about so deeply. We carry forward what he built and, more than that, the example he set.
